Get a degree in Social Media

It has hit friends, families, museums, businesses, celebrities. Now Social Media is to be part of a university syllabus. From next year, Birmingham City University in the UK is going to offer a £4,400 Masters Degree in Social Media. The course will show students how to set up blogs, podcasts and how to use sites like Facebook and Twitter effectively. You can watch the video designed to entice potential students here. 

 

The big question remains who will enter this programme. As many students have already remarked, getting a proper education in social networks as more than just a leisure-oriented experience is worth a try but, the contents of the one-year course, as analysed by some, may be largely achieved by some good self-teaching.

 

So who would really benefit from the programme? In addition to young postgraduates willing to enhance their resume without going out of their comfort zone too much, we can safely bet on established professionals willing to upgrade their skills as they did not experience constant exposure to Web 2.0 in its early days.

 

On the whole this initiative raises the issue of actually educating people to deal with the net, as new media are taking over and the need to learn and understand is becoming more and more important. Hopefully this programme will bring some real added value to people and eventually to businesses.
